Hey everyone,
The 2025.9 release of Home Assistant is a massive one, packed with some of the most significant UI and usability updates we’ve seen all year. The development team has really focused on refining the core experience, especially around automations and dashboards, making things more intuitive for everyone from beginners to seasoned power users. Here’s a quick rundown of the biggest highlights from the “Features for tiles and automations for miles” update.
Complete Automation Editor Overhaul
A new dual-pane UI on desktops now shows your automation’s flow on the left and the configuration options for the selected item in a sidebar on the right. This is a huge improvement for managing complex automations without endless scrolling. I love it.
New Experimental “Home” Dashboard
This is a new, opt-in, auto-generated dashboard designed to solve the “blank slate” problem for new users.
It automatically organizes your home with quick summaries for lights, climate, security, and media.
You can browse devices by area and pin your most-used entities as “Favorites” to the top for quick access.
It also includes insight cards for things like weather and energy.
Massive Upgrades to the Tile Card
Trend Chart: You can now add a 24-hour history graph directly to a tile for at-a-glance sensor monitoring.
Bar Gauge: A new horizontal bar is perfect for visualizing percentage-based entities like humidity or battery levels.
New Controls: Tiles now support media player controls, volume sliders, fan direction/oscillation controls, and open/close/position controls for valves.
Buttons: Tiles can now be used for automation, script, and button entities.
Deeper Matter Integration
The platform is moving beyond basic connectivity to support advanced, vendor-specific features.
Advanced Energy Monitoring: Support for detailed power consumption data from plugs like the Tapo P110M.
More Context: Locks can now report how they were unlocked (keypad, biometrics, etc.).
Vendor-Specific Features: Adjust the trigger sensitivity of the Aqara Door and Window Sensor P2 or pull local weather from Eve Weather sensors.
New Device States: Includes support for door-open sensors on refrigerators and a self-test button for smoke detectors.
New Integrations
Aladdin Connect: Control for smart garage door openers.
SEKO PoolDose: Monitor your pool’s water treatment system.
ToGrill: Support for Bluetooth BBQ thermometers.
Sleep as Android: Trigger automations based on your alarm clock or sleep cycles.
Voice and System Quality-of-Life Improvements
Assist Voice: Now supports “fuzzy matching” for English, making voice commands more natural and less rigid. It also has new built-in intents for controlling media volume and fan speeds.
Storage Insights: The storage settings page has a new color-coded visual breakdown, making it much easier to see what’s using up your disk space.
Faster Developer Tools: The Developer Tools > States page is now reportedly “lightning fast” for users with many entities.Overall, 2025.9 is a fantastic release that pushes the platform forward on both usability and power. The automation editor changes alone are a game-changer, and the new Home dashboard shows a promising future for the out-of-the-box experience. What’s your favorite new feature? Let me know what you think!
